The Wizard and the Prophet. Chales C. Mann. 2018. Es que el hombre escribe bien! (autor del muy interesante 1491).El Profeta ve lo que esta pasando y de allí concluye… el futuro sera así!. En cambio, el Mago ve lo que esta pasando y de allí… inventa y cambia para hacer que el futuro se parezca a lo que el quiere. Es la historia de dos científicos del S. XX. Vogt (el Profeta) y Borlaug (el Mago) involucrados en la Green Revolution y el movimiento conservacionista. Todos asumimos a veces una u otra posición. Se complementan. Libro cautivante y muy bien escrito. Acaso se pone pesado en algunas paginas.

Leyendo en el 2018
Dejo aquí mi reflexion sobre lo leído en este año que termina.
Faltan un millón de paginas! Tengo yo la ya arcaica costumbre de leer blogs. Variados en temas y alcances.
Pero quedan los libros, siempre están allí esos fabulosos objetos. Mágicos en su contenido y en cómo nos permiten visitar otros mundos, entender otras ideas, y conversar con gente interesantísima.
Seguro que se me olvida alguno. No en vano se muda uno de ciudad con solo la mitad de las cosas y tiene que sobrevivir al natural desorden.
Me impactaron profundamente The Fifth Risk de Michel Lewis y Sapiens de Yuval Noah Harari.
Todo lo que escribe Lewis es informativo y entretenido. Si bien este libro empieza como una critica a ese desorden inmenso y corrupto que es el des-gobierno (coño, no he pasado yo ya por esto?)de Trump, termina siendo una profunda reflexión sobre la importancia de nuestro gobierno federal. Alguien dijo que es una carta de amor y yo coincido. El quinto riesgo es usar la ignorancia como modelo de gobierno. No se y eso me parece chevere.
Harari es uno de los mas distinguidos escritores de la actualidad. Su capacidad de síntesis y de construcción son inusuales. Que libro tan entretenido! y mire Usted que se pasea por la historia de la humanidad… toda la historia. No se detiene en reyes y villanos. Se dedica a las ideas que hilan nuestra historia. Lo importante antes que lo destacado. De mas esta decir que ya están en cola sus otros dos libros.
Leo muy poca ficción, pero este año me tropecé con una nueva escritora y una pequeña gran novela, Severance Espero que la autora, Ling Ma, escriba mucho más en el futuro.
También a medio camino entre historia y novela, Agrippina, producto de la excelente Unbound en la Gran Bretaña (es una editorial crowdsource donde uno paga por los libros que quiere ver publicados) y en realidad una presentación honesta y bajo una óptica actual de una de las mujeres mas influyentes de la historia romana.
Divertidos pero no relevantes, un libro sobre cuchillos Sharp y otro sobre el dolor de espalda (ouch!):Croocked. Este ultimo es el tipo de libro que te da conocimiento y te quita ilusión. En realidad, pocas cosas le serán efectivas si Usted empieza con el bendito dolor de espalda.

Uno que es una delicia, Chairs by Arquitects. Un compendio de cosas raras y bellas: Sillas
Ya para cerrar, Ninety percent of everything, un muy entretenido viaje por el mundo del transporte maritimo. Al menos para mí, que hice vida en eso que llamamos cadenas de suministro. El truco del Diablo en estos tiempos modernos es hacernos invisible lo que pasa a nuestro alrededor. Vivimos encerrados en una cápsula y no vemos ni sabemos lo que pasa para que nosotros tengamos la vida que tenemos. Este libro le abre un poco los ojos a uno

What I read during 2014
Where to start? Letters of Note is a wonderful recollection of letters from Shaun Usher and his fantastic blog. I got the first (UK) edition and later a second one. But… my favorite letter didn’t make the cut into the book. Still, a pleasant reading and a source of inspiration
From Maira Kalman, a magic book and from Amanda Palmer a soulful reflection on the humane nature. Both of them highly recommended
El mundo según Cabrujas hails from my country, Venezuela, and put together many op-eds from one of our best writers. All of them entertaining, many premonitory of our current predicament as a country.
My interest in China took my to Kissinger and On China. The Deng book is interesting because of the subject…but the author is too much celebratory and too little critical.
Why Nations Fails and the Bottom Billion are part of my phD program. If you don’t HAVE to read International Organizations… please don’t. A bland book to say the least.
A couple of historical novels (Ah…! The always entertaining Tudors!) a few books on anxiety, spirituality and habits. The biographies of David Foster Wallace (a tragedy to lose him so early) and the guy that put the cat in the box…and changed many things forever, Erwin Schrodinger
That’s it. At least 26 books. Maybe a couple of them are laying around or I didn’t finish them
